Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
An important political figure said the incident made him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
