Previous FBI Director James Comey Files Denial Plea to Accusations of Falsehoods Lawmakers
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.
Mr Comey's attorney submitted the answer representing him in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the case thrown out for multiple factors including that his client, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being singled out.
Mr Comey was charged soon after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.
Legal Proceedings
In court on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald told the magistrate they intended to present multiple legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the legal action was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was improperly designated to assume control of the case.
Mr Comey's legal matter was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into an additional rival - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.
Courtroom Atmosphere
James Comey seemed in positive mood as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and making jokes. He was accompanied by his wife, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the previous administration dismissed.
Upon hearing to the court read his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he grasped the charges.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the proceedings.
Historical Information
The former director was the head of the FBI from four years and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, the director was directing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.
Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against the candidate were never brought, causing disapproval from the Republican party as well.
Present Charges
Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted someone at the agency to disclose to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.
Individual Responses
In a video the former director published to his Instagram after he was charged, he stated he was innocent and charged Trump of acting like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have known for years that there are costs to opposing the former president," he commented. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
The accusations against James Comey came after the former president shared on social media insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and additional individuals.
